Arsenal are heading to the UEFA Champions League semifinals after a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the second leg of their quarterfinal clash. The result sealed a dominant 5-1 aggregate victory and set up a marquee matchup with Paris Saint-Germain.

The defeat has once again sparked questions around Kylian Mbappe, who continues to chase an elusive Champions League title. While PSG reached the semifinals for the second straight season, the focus remains firmly on the French forward, whose quiet outing contributed to a disappointing exit for the Spanish giants.

Bukayo Saka had a chance to strike early but saw his first-half penalty saved, giving Real Madrid a brief glimmer of hope. It didn’t last long.

Saka made up for it in the 65th minute, opening the scoring to put Arsenal in front. Vinicius Jr. responded almost immediately, leveling the match just two minutes later.

But Arsenal stayed calm and kept control. Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal, sending the Gunners into the final four.

Did Real Madrid make a ‘huge mistake’ signing Kylian Mbappe?

Hindsight is 20-20, but on Europe 1, French presenter Cyril Hanouna stated that Real Madrid made a mistake in signing Mbappe after the 26-year-old left the Parisians last summer as a free agent to the Spanish capital.

“Last year, the atmosphere at PSG wasn’t good,” Hanouna said (h/t Le10Sport). “And in terms of image, it wasn’t great—there was a lot of criticism. Today, everything is going well, there’s competition. We don’t need Kylian Mbappe. He made a huge mistake by betraying PSG and Nasser Al-Khelaifi.”

“You can see the atmosphere at Real Madrid is a disaster. Florentino Perez made a huge mistake. I saw Ancelotti looking dejected in his seat as early as the 33rd minute. That’s unacceptable. Why hasn’t Vinicius Jr. been good this year? Because Mbappe arrived—let’s stop with the nonsense. [On Wednesday], Saliba shut him down. He knows him inside out.”

Real Madrid are still battling for the league title and Copa del Rey, but if they fail to win both trophies, pundits will undoubtedly declare that Year 1 with the Frenchman will be considered a failure.
