There are many factors that one can point to as to why Paris Saint-Germain has had several underperformances this season. From injuries to possible lack of a tactical identity, there is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to discussing PSG’s struggles this season. But one French midfielder is taking a different route to this dilemma.

Olympiacos midfielder Mathieu Valbuena believes that one of PSG’s issues this season is its lack of outspoken leaders on the team. He does not believe that the team currently has that one player who can lead and motivate the team through the highs and lows. Valbuena provided further thoughts on this matter to RMC Sport.

“There is a lack of leaders in this team,” Valbuena said. “You don’t need leaders when everything is going well and the team wins 2-0 or 3-0. It’s easy in those times. When you’re PSG, you can’t afford to lead 2-0 and lose 3-2. When your boat capsizes, you need captains. I don’t see any player who puts things in order.”

PSG is set for what is essentially now a crucial UEFA Champions League return group stage fixture against RB Leipzig. Not many are pitting PSG as the clear favorites to pick up the win and all three points in the contest, but Valbuena is predicting that the club will comfortably step up to the calling with a win.

“There is no picture if the Parisians are at their level, and they will be at their level, I’m almost certain,” Valbuena said. “Because they play for their future and their coach too. The Parisians have already shown that, even with their backs to the wall, they know how to respond. I think the players are determined.”

A convincing win for PSG can help move the club into a top-two standing in its Champions League group.
