Marseille can’t afford William Saliba’s asking price this summer, according to reports, and the player appeared to say farewell on Sunday.

Despite the talk of William Saliba returning to Marseille next season, the French media don’t appear to believe that prospect is likely.

L’Equipe (via GFFN) report that Saliba will be valued at around €30m this summer, and Marseille can’t afford that asking price. The French outlet expect Arsenal to receive several offers from other clubs, which seemingly rules Marseille out.

Arsenal fans would probably argue that even that €30m price tag sounds low, so if Marseille can’t even pay that, they aren’t in the running at all.

Saliba seemed to say farewell to Marseille on Instagram, posting a message of thanks before adding “it was special” on his Instagram story.

Saliba had suggested to the media that he would be happy to return to Marseille in the future. But despite being pushed by local reporters, he stopped short of confirming that a return is actually what he wants this summer.

“If I come back it would be with great pleasure,” Saliba said. “As a footballer, we all want to play Champions League. Especially as I’ve never played it before.

“Especially in a stadium like this one, one that hasn’t seen UCL in a long time. I’d like to play here on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.”

It seems pretty clear Arsenal will want Saliba to return and play for them next season.

The centre-back won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award the previous weekend, and the Gunners won’t want to let him slip through their grasp, particularly not for any less than his market value.

Saliba is still under contract at Arsenal for two years, so the Gunners could simply refuse to let him leave – if they even need to.
