Liverpool have been handed a potential boost in the race to sign Houssem Aouar as Lyon have reportedly lowered their asking price to €30m.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Lyon are now prepared to accept €30m for Aouar as he has had an ‘average’ season in Ligue 1.

The report does not claim how much they initially wanted for the Frenchman, but explains that they are not expecting to attract as much interest due to his form which is why they are ready to make him available for €30m.

With Gini Wijnaldum on the verge of leaving Liverpool on a free transfer, Aouar could be a sensible addition to the squad this summer. The Reds are reportedly looking at Aouar as one of a number of potential replacements and this latest update could give them added hope of being able to sign him. Liverpool have reportedly been hit hard financially by the Covid-19 pandemic, which suggests that Aouar being cheaper than expected could be good news for the club as they will not have to spend as much money to acquire him.

However, it is worrying that Lyon have lowered their asking price due to Aouar’s form. Last season in Ligue 1, Aouar averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.02 across 25 appearances, impressing in the heart of their midfield. This term, however, Aouar has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.78 in 28 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon, highlighting his dip in form over the last 12 months or so.

This means that Liverpool may need to weigh up whether the decreased transfer fee is worth the gamble given his drop in form. It is worth noting that he only turns 23 later this year and it could just be that he has endured a rough patch that he will come out the other side of in the near future. He still has plenty of years to improve and develop and he could do that at Liverpool next season.
