As reported by Bild, Freiburg are set to extend the contract of promising goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

After the summer sale of number one goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Brentford for €13m, Freiburg knew that they had a ready-made replacement in 21-year-old Atubolu. The German under-21 goalkeeper is considered the country’s future shot-stopper and this has garnered attention from top Bundesliga clubs, as well as other elite European sides.

Freiburg want to express their absolute trust in Atubolu by giving him the opportunity to succeed Flekken this season. This new role will also be reflected in the goalkeeper’s contract with Atubolu set to be given a significant pay rise to keep him in the Black Forest for the foreseeable future.

Last season, Atubolu featured 25 times for Freiburg II in the 3. Liga where he was able to keep twelve clean sheets, while only conceding 23 goals. On top of this, the 21-year-old featured on three occasions for Freiburg, once in the Europa League and twice in the DFB-Pokal where he kept one clean sheet.

Both parties are aiming to discuss the terms in the coming days, despite Atubolu only signing a new long-term deal until 2025 last October. He is expected to make his Bundesliga debut for Freiburg on matchday one away at Hoffenheim.
