Speaking to the media virtually, he discussed

Timo Werner’s struggles

“All players experience this in their career and when all eyes are on you, it becomes magnified so I need to work with him on it.”

Werner’s Fernando Torres comparisons

“I’m not comparing him to anybody. Everybody is different, Torres had difficult times here but won the Champions League.

“All we need to do is create the best environment to get the best out of Timo.He needs to work hard, keep his head down and focus. I need to give him positivity.”

“He isn’t ready so he won’t be in the squad. He hasn’t fully recovered from his hamstring strain. But there are no other injuries. Andreas Christensen is available.”

Fikayo Tomori’s Milan move

“It is a difficult predicament for centre-backs who don’t play regularly and that’s why he may go out on loan. There is no detail on those [purchase option] reports.”

Mason Mount’s growing confidence

“He’s playing with confidence. I talk about him a lot, his work ethic in training is one of those reasons. When you’re in a difficult patch, you have to fight your way out of it.

“We need to see some production and some numbers from the top end of the pitch. We have been a bit short on that recently but it will come back.

“Mason is a good example of someone that is always fighting and playing really well.”

“He does so much work off the ball. He does all the basics, moves the ball quickly scores goals, finds assists, he does all those things.

“One thing he has got is a great attitude. A great way of seeming like he is never concerned about the outside. The critics are wrong. He’s just turned 22, imagine what he is like at 25, 27.”

Danny Drinkwater’s departure

“It’s great for Danny to leave to go and play for himself to get some games. I am trying to make sure the balance is right here.”

Leicester City threat

“They’re in the title race. We managed to get above them at the back end but it was a big ask. They are a good team, good players and a really good coach in Brendan.”
