Netherlands boss Frank de Boer has confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt will miss Sunday’s Euro 2020 Group C opener with Ukraine.

De Ligt has been recovering from a groin injury and was hoping to be fit for the Ukraine game, but De Boer says the Juventus defender has lost the race against time.

“Matthijs de Ligt won’t play tomorrow, we are not taking the risk,” the Dutch coach told reporters on Saturday.

“Maarten Stekelenburg will start in goal.”

On Saturday morning, a plane flew over the Netherlands training ground with a message for De Boer …

But the coach insists he will be sticking to his guns.

“I hired a plane too with: ‘Thanks for the tip, but it will remain 532’,” he joked.

“532 always sounds so negative. You can also say we play 352, then we only play with three defenders. In my opinion we function the best in this system.”
