31 years ago we went trick or treating a day earlier than usual as we headed to the spooky surroundings over on the south side of Glasgow.

No one expected us to do anything which was the norm in that era, and mostly everyone had a home win as a dead cert.

But Celtic have a history of upsetting the odds and headed to Ibrox in good spirits as we were unbeaten in our last couple games under the temporary care of Frank Connor. Lou Macari was in the dugout, but the team selection and tactics were all down to Connor.

Nothing much happened in the first hour or so, and we held out hope for a positive result until Ally McCoist put the home side in front and it looked like it wasn’t going to be our day.

Celtic supporters put their head in their hands as the Ibrox supporters celebrated what we all thought was going to be a sure fire home win.

But with the home supporters still dancing in the stands, Ally Maxwell in the Rangers goal decided to give us an early treat when he dropped the ball at the feet of John Collins in the penalty box.

John still had a lot to do, and it seemed an age before he stroked the ball into the net to send the Celtic supporters in the Broomloan Road stand into a state of euphoria.

With twenty minutes or so still remaining we were back in the game out of absolutely nothing. The next twenty minutes flew by and it looked as if we would be leaving with a satisfactory point, but then deep in injury time we were awarded a corner kick.

John Collins whipped the ball in with his magical left peg and Ally Maxwell looked in the treating mood once more as he completely missed the ball which landed straight on the head of Brian O’Neil who had the simple task of nodding the ball into an empty net.

The members of the Celtic bench ran onto the park. The players celebrated with the ecstatic supporters. The Rangers supporters headed for the exits. What a day and night that turned out to be!
