Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for Sporting CP forward Francisco Trincao.
The Portuguese played under manager Ruben Amorim at Sporting and featured in various roles in his preferred 3-4-2-1 set-up.
United players have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s methods, so they are being linked with players who are familiar with his tactical demands.
The Red Devils’ interest in the Portuguese might also be explained by the link with his Sporting teammate Geovany Quenda, who has also worked with Amorim.
Trincao and Quenda play on the right side of Sporting’s attack and have developed a synergy. Amorim may want to recreate that partnership at United.
Trincao’s possible arrival at United will help relieve the creativity burden on Bruno Fernandes, who has been the Red Devils’ standout performer.
The Sporting forward is the Primeira Liga’s most creative player this season. He ranks first for assists, key passes and most big chances created per game.
He also combines his creativity with flair, having averaged 2.5 dribbles per game, the third highest in the Portuguese top flight.
Trincao would give Amorim multiple quality attacking options, a privilege he has lacked since he arrived at Old Trafford.
However, while Trincao is a quality player, United should focus on signing a quality striker, a central midfielder and a right wing-back.
They already have enough options for the number 10 position. Signing Trincao or any player of his ilk should not be a priority, given the club’s financial situation.
