It was a busy summer for the Addicks as Jones reshaped the squad ahead of his first full campaign in charge at The Valley. The club appear to have made some shrewd additions, but the departure of Alfie May was always going to be a tough one for the Londoners.

A return of nine points from the opening three games shows that there is a lot of quality in the Charlton squad, and whilst Jones is pleased with the group, he admitted they will continue to look for ways to improve.

It remains to be seen what business Charlton can get done, but Jeffers feels that a new signing could help maintain momentum and add to the feel-good factor around the club.

Quizzed on whether the Addicks should look to add to the squad through the free agent market, he told Football League World: “Absolutely.

The team has started well and with big ambitions, any further signings can build on the positive start as games come thick and fast and to ensure momentum stays, adding more quality at this level can help.

You have to back the manager as he has shown there is good potential following the excellent start to the season.”

Charlton Athletic must only target quality additions

Pleasingly for Charlton, they aren’t in a position where they’re desperate at this stage, so it’s not like they have to go out and sign a player otherwise they will be left short.

However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t free agents that will help the squad, but Jones needs to be sure that they will enhance the group.

The Addicks did a lot of work in the summer, and the focus was on bringing in players that the manager wanted, and those that suited his style of play, and the fact they’ve won three of their first four suggests they’ve got a lot right.

As Jeffers says, new signings can help lift the mood, and increasing competition for places does help drive standards, but it has to be the right player.

Jones has been successful at this level before, so he knows what’s required, and if he feels a free agent can help, then the board must do all they can to bring them in.

Charlton Athletic’s areas to strengthen

It has been claimed that Dan Potts is a target for the club, with Jones knowing the left-sided defender from his time with the Hatters, where Potts had spent the past nine years.

He would be a good fit, as he can fill in two positions, and that know-how and experience could help the group as they look to win promotion this season.

Some fans will feel other areas could be improved, and, like most clubs, Charlton would surely be in the market for an attacking player if they thought someone would make a big difference.

Jones’ men are back in action this weekend when they host Rotherham United.
