You'll be hard pushed to find a footballer from the modern era more universally adored than Francesco Totti.

Il Capitano remained with boyhood team AS Roma for the entirety of his professional career, which spanned 25 years from 1992 all the way up until 2017.

As well as being the capital club's record goalscorer (307) and all-time leading appearance maker (785), Totti often made professional football look like a stroll in the park while donning the Giallorossi's famous jersey.

His collection of wonder-goals for Roma is enormous and cherry-picking the best of the bunch is effectively an impossible task.

But there is one Totti masterpiece in particular that most football fans - including us - will always refer to when debating the topic of the maestro's finest on-pitch moment.

The goal in question came during the 2005/06 Serie A season against Inter Milan, a game Roma won 3-2 at San Siro.

Totti rippled the back of the net twice that evening in Milan and the first of his two strikes was the definition of footballing beauty.

The now 45-year-old charged towards the Inter penalty area with the ball under his spell and he then spotted Julio Cesar in a rather precarious position.

So Totti decided to take advantage of that and produced a sumptuous lobbed finish from the edge of the box that sailed over the Inter goalkeeper's head in mesmerising fashion.

There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to describe that goal from Totti.

Perhaps the most fitting way to put the strike into words is by borrowing a brilliant quote from Giovanni Trapattoni, which reads: “Every player has some genius, but there’s only one Van Gogh, and there is nobody like Totti.”

The 2005/06 campaign was one of Totti's most prolific, despite the fact he missed a number of games through injury.

In 25 league appearances, the two-time Serie A Footballer of the Year netted 15 goals and assisted a further nine, an average of a contribution per game.

The following season, Totti went into full 'beast mode'.

He scored 32 goals across all competitions for Roma in 2006/07, a total which saw him scoop the coveted European Golden Shoe award.

What a player he was.
