France’s social security body seeks legal priority over Lyon’s debts as DNCG ruling looms

Olympique Lyonnais’ financial turmoil has taken another serious turn as France’s social security body, URSSAF, has launched a rare legal procedure against the club, casting fresh doubt on OL’s solvency just weeks before a crucial DNCG hearing.

According to L’Équipe journalist Mathieu Grégoire, URSSAF has referred the matter to the Tribunal de Commerce in an attempt to classify its unpaid claims as “privileged debts”. Should Lyon enter judicial recovery, this move would put the public body at the front of the queue to recoup money owed — a highly unusual and serious legal step that signals the extent of concern within public institutions over OL’s finances. This development is yet another setback for John Textor and Eagle Football Group, who face growing regulatory and financial pressure in France. OL’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, has deprived the club of key revenue streams. The DNCG — French football’s financial watchdog — is set to audit OL’s accounts and hear directly from Textor on June 24. GFFN | George Boxall
