France’s Raphaël Varane “fit and ready” to face Denmark

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Raphaël Varane (29) is “fit and ready” to feature for France against Denmark on Saturday.

Varane suffered a small hamstring tear whilst playing against Chelsea for Manchester United in late October. The former Real Madrid centre-back left the pitch in tears that day, with his World Cup dream in doubt. However, the injury wasn’t as bad as first feared, even if Varane was still in a race to be fit for the World Cup.

The Manchester United centre-back didn’t feature in Les Bleus’ opener against Australia on Tuesday. Instead, Dayot Upamecano (24) and Ibrahima Konaté (23) started in the middle of a back-four, as France eased to a 4-1 victory despite an early scare.

Varane’s return is being managed, but speaking ahead of Saturday’s game against Denmark, Deschamps has revealed that the centre-back will be fit to play in France’s second World Cup fixture. “He could have played against Australia because he was fit. He was fit for the first match and he isn’t less fit for the second. He has experience. The most important thing is that he feels ready both physically and mentally. I know that he is,” L’Équipe.
