France face host nation Germany in the UEFA Nations League third-place play-off this evening.
Les Bleus lost to Spain in the semi-finals after an enthralling encounter. After a nightmare start, France fell four goals behind inside the opening 55 minutes before mounting a late fightback. It wasn’t enough to progress, as Didier Deschamps’ side lost 5-4 to the European champions.
Germany’s hopes of a first Nations League title also ended in the last four. The hosts led against Portugal through Florian Wirtz, but quick-fire goals from Francisco Conceição and Cristian Ronaldo turned the game around for the Portuguese.
Deschamps has few options to reshape a defence that was badly exposed against Spain. Dayot Upamecano, Jules Kounde and William Saliba are all absent from the squad. Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez are options to come in, replacing Pierre Kalulu and Clement Lenglet in the back four.
Rayan Cherki’s cameo was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing evening for France. The winger impressed after coming off the bench and marked his debut with a stunning goal.
Kylian Mbappe netted from the penalty spot and now needs one more goal to reach 50 for the national team. Only Olivier Giroud and Thierry Henry have previously reached that landmark for France.
France predicted XI: Maignan; Pavard, Konate, L. Hernandez, Digne; Tchouameni, Kone; Dembele, Cherki, Barcola; Mbappe.
