Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty but France conceded a spot kick to Robert Lewandowski in a 1-1 draw with Poland, which saw Les Bleus finish second in Group D. Austria beat Netherlands to clinch top spot as Netherlands will advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

France will play the runner-up in Group E, which could be Belgium, Romania, Slovakia or Ukraine, in the last 16 on July 1, and must improve after another underwhelming displace. The pre-tournament favourites have yet to score an open-play goal at Euro 2024.

Mbappe returned to the starting line-up but wearing a mask after breaking his nose. The captain had three shots on target but largely kept away from the more physical battle and did not compete for the ball in the air.
