The first test of the summer awaits the Lionesses
AP
The Lionesses embark on their quest to become the first England side to successfully defend a major honour today as they meet France in Zurich. Standing between England and a second straight Euros title is an unenviable group, which also features Wales and the Netherlands, who will also play this evening as Group D enjoys its first full matchday of the summer.
Sarina Wiegman’s side come into the match on strong recent form after putting seven past Jamaica in their last pre-tournament friendly, though previous results, where England have just one win in three, leave cause for concern. In a boost to England, though, Lauren James may well return to the starting lineup having recovered from a hamstring issue. She made a half-hour cameo in the Jamaica win.
France’s tournament preparations have not been without concern, as head coach Laurent Bonadei came under fire for leaving long-standing captain Wendie Renard out of the squad - a decision Chelsea full-back Lucy Bronze described as a ‘shock’.
