France drawn with Austria and The Netherlands for Euro 2024 group stage

This Saturday evening’s Euro 2024 group stage has seen firm favorites France drawn into Group D, where they will face Austria, The Netherlands and the playoff winner A, which will be either Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.

Les Bleus have cruised through their qualifying campaign, winning seven games out of a possible eight. France’s top seed status for tonight’s draw in Hamburg meant their odds of being handed a group stage as hard as last time around were very slim. For the Euro 2020, Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus had to dig deep to top a Group F composed of Portugal, Hungary and Germany. France infamously exited the tournament at the last-16 stage against Switzerland with Kylian Mbappé missing his attempt in the penalty shoot-out.

France will meet some familiar faces next June in Germany. The 2022 World Cup runners-up faced Austria during their latest Nations League campaign, winning 2-0 and drawing 1-1. Les Bleus and the Netherlands locked horns during the qualifying group, with France winning both home (4-0) and away (2-1) games. France will have to wait for March’s playoffs to know their third opponent, which will be either Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.
