Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram played the supporting cast for Inter Milan against Udinese, while Davide Frattesi was the “man of destiny.”
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter strikers Martinez and Thuram have been in the midst of something of a goal drought.
Neither of the duo have gotten on the scoresheet for Inter since February. Martinez last scored against Atalanta, whilst Thuram’s most recent goal came against Salernitana.
The team have found other ways to score.
The likes of Federico Dimarco, Yann Bisseck, and Matteo Darmian have stepped up whilst the two main goalscorers’ radars have been off.
However, there has been a sense that Martinez and Thuram must get back to scoring sooner or later.
Earlier on in the season, it was precisely that duo that fired Inter’s explosive form.
And a return to finding the back of the net for the strike pair would certainly help push Inter over the line.
From a perspective of ending their respective goal droughts, it was another disappointing evening for Martinez and Thuram at the Bluenergy Stadium yesterday.
But that does not mean that the pair did not make telling contributions.
Both Martinez and Thuram were full of running, and linked up the play as Inter dominated the ball and attempted to carve out chances in the final third.
And then in the second half, it was Thuram whose anticipation led to the penalty from which Inter equalized.
Then, Martinez was vital in the stoppage time winning goal.
The Argentine nearly scored an excellent goal with a curling effort from outside the penalty area.
Martinez’s shot was just wide, but deflected off the post.
This was enough to allow Frattesi to tap it into an empty net.
The Italian international may have been the “man of destiny” to gift Inter the three points. That’s become a habit for him this season.
But the importance of Martinez – and Thuram – putting in the work should not be overlooked.
