The UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-finals took place Friday night. Here is what went down around Europe.
Scorers: Diani 41′, Karchaoui (P) 45′ ; Gwinn (P) 81′
France held off a late comeback to ease past Germany.
While it was an even affair from the first whistle, the hosts found another gear in the dying minutes of the first half to find the pivotal lead.
Just four minutes after Kadidiatou Diani opened the scoring for France, left-back Sakina Karchaoui stepped up the penalty spot and doubled the lead with nearly the last kick of the half.
A late Giulia Gwinn penalty brought the Germans to within one inside the final 10 minutes, but it was merely a consolation goal as France held on to collect the semi-final win.
Scorers: Jenni 41′, Bonmatí 45′, Batlle 78′
Two first half goals saw Spain cruise past the Netherlands in the other semi-final.
The world champions found supremacy once the ball got rolling at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
The deadlock was broken by Jenni Hermoso in the final five minutes of the opening interval to give the home side a deserved lead.
That strike was followed up by an Aitana Bonmatí goal to all but put the tie to bed against a limp Dutch side only four minutes later.
The icing on the Spanish cake came in the final 15 minutes when Ona Batlle her side three ahead, wrapping up an impressive semi-final showing.
