Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers head into a tricky weekend of football, with several teams, including Manchester City, Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion, set for a blank Gameweek 28 due to FA Cup commitments.

There are only seven fixtures this weekend, while 12 sides have a Double Gameweek 29. Activating a Free Hit chip this week could prove a smart strategy for managers who are short on players and looking to maximise the next Gameweek.

With the Manchester clubs cup-tied for the weekend, FPL managers will be looking for a capable alternative for the captain’s armband to City’s goal machine Erling Braut Haaland and United’s top scorer Marcus Rashford.

While there are several other options to explore, we take a look at four of the best captain’s picks for Gameweek 28 ahead of the deadline on Friday, 17 March, at 18:30 GMT.

Harry Kane (£11.7m)

The 29-year-old has been one of the more consistent players for Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side this season and is yet to draw blanks in consecutive Gameweeks thus far.

Kane has produced two goals and an assist over the last four Gameweeks. The in-form striker bagged a brace in his side’s 3-1 success over Nottingham Forest last time out, taking his goal tally to 20 strikes for the season.

Kane will visit Southampton on the back of a 13-point haul against the Tricky Trees – his fifth double-figure score of the campaign.

The lethal Spurs talisman offers FPL managers a strong captain’s pick as he averages 7.3 points per match against the Saints and will be looking to continue his impressive form at the weekend.

Gabriel Martinelli (£7.3m)

The Arsenal star also offers FPL managers another route in choosing who gets the armband at the weekend, having amassed two double-digit returns over the last four Gameweeks.

Martinelli has been the Gunners’ top performer in FPL recently, notching five goals and amassing 42 points over their five matches – the most of any Arsenal player within that period.

The Brazilian forward was in on the action in his side’s 3-0 riot over Fulham last time out, returning eight points, and looks set to continue his rich vein of form when Crystal Palace visits the Emirates Stadium.

Ivan Toney (£7.8m)

With 16 Premier League goals this season, Toney has been at the forefront of Brentford’s impressive push for a place in Europe next season.

The Englishman continued his fantastic run of form with a goal and an assist against Southampton in midweek, taking his FPL returns to 143 points this season.

The in-form marksman will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing Leicester City in front of the Brentford faithful, as the Foxes have shipped in ten goals in their last five games on the road.

Ollie Watkins (£7.4m)

The Aston Villa man is currently on his most prolific run of form in the English top flight yet, having found the back of the net in six of his last seven appearances.

The red-hot striker is the most transferred-in forward this week after claiming 50 points over the last seven Gameweeks.

Unai Emery’s side host Bournemouth at the weekend and Watkins is poised to continue his goalscoring form against a Cherries side that has the worst defensive record in the English top-flight this season.
