A new Premier League season means a new FPL season and here are five things to keep in mind when sorting your team for the first gameweek.

Pick Erling Haaland

This one is a no-brainer. Haaland may be the most expensive player in the game by a distance (14.0) but he is selected by 86.5% of managers and is almost certain to be their captain.

You can’t afford to miss out on those points when everyone else is collecting them, especially with City facing two promoted sides in their first three games.

Go for Reece James or Ben Chilwell

When at Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino squeezed the absolute maximum out of his fullbacks, whether it was Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier or Danny Rose in the side.

So what about Reece James or Ben Chilwell at Chelsea? Both are priced at 5.5, both are guaranteed to play when fit, and Chelsea have a friendly looking start to the season once this weekend’s visit of Liverpool is out of the way.

Liverpool risks early on

Trent Alexander-Arnold offers goals and assists but he’s by far the most expensive defender (8.0) and plays in a side that has an unclear midfield situation following the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

On top of that, five of Liverpool’s first eight games are away from home and none of those opening eight fixtures come against promoted sides.

Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez are both tempting at 7.5 but it’s unclear who might play more often or if they’ll be rotated. It might be best waiting a few weeks to inject some Liverpool into your side.

Look out for injuries!

It seems like a straightforward thing but maybe you made your team a few weeks ago and players have picked up injuries since?

Gabriel Jesus is out for now but is still the 12th most selected forward. Christopher Nkunku, injured for a couple of months, is 14th. Check your team before Friday’s deadline!

Remember things change over the summer

Brighton have greater depth in their frontline, but will the same players get regular starts? Brentford no longer have Ivan Toney, is it worth betting on an attack that might not function without him? Will Aston Villa continue their strong end to last season with European football in the mix?

Sometimes you’d be better off waiting a week or two to see how teams are lining up before committing to a player.
