With a population barely over 50,000, Villarreal is one of the Spains’ least populated cities. But the locals have been privileged to watch some of football’s finest down the years.
Juan Riquelme, Marcos Senna, Diego Forlān and Santi Carzola are just some of the names that have plied their trade at the Estadio de la Cerámica this century.
Now newly unearthed Yéremy Pino is looking to emulate them all.
The difference with Yéremy, although he isn’t one of their own, that the club have played a pivotal role in his development. They already know all about him in Villarreal but now, after, Sunday the rest of the world is about to sit up and take notice.
Pino made LaLiga history as the Yellow Submarine thrashed Espanyol 5-1 to strengthen their quest to finish in the top four.
The 19-year-old became the youngest ever player to score a first-half treble in the league and it gets better; it was a perfect hat-trick.
He wasn’t done there, adding another eight minutes into the second half. That saw him become the first player to score four in a LaLiga game since Lionel Messi last managed it in February 2020. And it was the first time anyone had ever scored four goals for Villarreal. Considering the likes of Forlan, Giuseppe Rossi, Nihat and Nilmar have represented the club in attack makes the feat a seriously impressive achievement.
Pino had only scored twice all season before Vicente Moreno’s side rolled into town, but the variety in the goals suggests Unai Emery’s side may have a proper goalscorer on their hands.
All of his 5’8″ frame leapt highest to get on to the end of Pervis Estupiñán’s cross to head Villarreal in front before showing the credentials of a penalty-box poacher to snatch two tap-ins to round off a historic first half.
His fourth was testament to the technical ability of the winger, as he latched on to a through ball before casually rounding Diego Lòpez.
Emery’s side are the form team in Spain, having lost just once in the last 10 games, scoring 26 and conceding just six times in that period.
The former Arsenal boss looked as if he might lose his job in October and now he is spearheading a real charge towards Champions League qualification.
In Yéremy it looks as if they have one of the best young talents in the country to aid that quest.
Did Arsenal fans know that Gabriel Paulista was capable of this?
