As reported by multiple reliable sources a while back, FC Barcelona are seriously considering taking away the captaincy from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The relationship between the club and the player appears to be on the brink of a complete breakdown.

The 33-year-old’s statement on Thursday, wherein he revealed he would undergo surgery and be out of action for three months, has not pleased Barça.

As such, there is growing consensus within the club that Ter Stegen is no longer the ideal candidate to lead the group.

Four candidates to join the leadership group

Last season, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick appointed five captains, with Ter Stegen being the first captain, followed by Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri.

Now, with Ter Stegen likely to be stripped of his captaincy duties, a position opens up in the leadership group.

And, as per Mundo Deportivo, there are several senior players who could step into the leadership group..

The four candidates, as per the report, are veteran defender Inigo Martinez, seasoned striker Robert Lewandowski, the hard-working Ferran Torres, and even teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Martinez has proven himself to be a leader in the group with his experience and mentality, and can be a worthy addition. The same holds for Lewandowski as well.

Ferran may not be a regular starter, but has earned Hansi Flick’s trust with his valuable contributions, strong mentality and work ethic.

Handing Lamine Yamal the captaincy at just 18 might be a bit premature, but he is already the face of this Barcelona team and has shown that he thrives under the pressure and responsibility.

Currently, as mentioned above, the other captains are Araujo, De Jong, Pedri, and Raphinha. Flick must now decide whether to appoint a new first captain himself or allow the squad to vote, as was done previously at Barcelona.

And as for the vacant spot, should Barcelona follow through with their decision on Ter Stegen, the aforementioned quartet could join the captaincy group.
