Barcelona’s financial troubles are well-documented, and they have only gone and become worse over the course of the last few months.

The club decided to sell several assets in an attempt to raise money to buy players, but have since been eliminated from the Champions League. That puts them several millions behind what they would have expected in terms of revenue at this stage of the season.

Barcelona’s problems are likely to continue through the next few weeks as well, with the January transfer window closing in.

Ideally, their plan was to sign some players to fill in the void still left in several positions, but they also wanted to promote Gavi, Inaki Pena, and Alejandro Balde to the first team, hand an extension to Balde, and also update Araujo’s contract.

These plans could be in the mud now, however, as Barça have been warned about the updated Financial Fair Play rules imposed on them. La Liga have informed the Catalans that they are back on the 4:1 spending restriction, which means they will have to raise €4 before spending €1.

Therefore, as it stands, they will be unable to officially promote Gavi to the first-team and give him the #6 jersey, as has been planned for months now. The same goes for Balde, whose breakthrough season meant instant promotion to the senior side in January.

In fact, Balde was due for a contract extension soon, which will now be halted.

Pena is officially Barcelona’s second-choice goalkeeper this season following Neto’s exit in the summer. However, he still dons a reserve side number, and is due for a promotion and extension.

Ronald Araujo has been officially renewed, but his contract cannot be officially updated unless Barcelona find a way around the FFP rules again.
