Over the years, Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has had his fair share of critics, including former World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit. The longtime French international recently noted that PSG’s call to sign Neymar to an extension deal is the “biggest mistake made” by the club in “recent years.”

Now, Petit is coming to the defense of Neymar amid the recent rumors noting of a possible exit for the forward from PSG.

Speaking on RMC Sport‘s Rothen s’enflamme program, Petit said that next season, PSG will see the “real Neymar.”

“Today we move towards a divorce and almost we do not spit in his face and we show him the exit by pointing to him,” Petit said.

“I tell you, the great champions never die. In his ego, with the World Cup coming up quickly, knowing what happened last season, that they are eagerly awaited, and that everyone is pushing him out … but he has a contract and that is respected. … This season, you will see the real Neymar. He’s going to come back sharp with teeth that scratch the floor, and he’s going to want to make everyone agree.”

Neymar did finish this past season on a strong note, which included recording at least one goal contribution in his last 10 matches combined with PSG and the Brazil national team.

For now, much attention sure will be on whether Neymar will end up staying put at PSG past the ongoing summer transfer window.
