Former West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal passes Hoffenheim medical

Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg both report that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are on the verge of signing Czech defender Vladimir Coufal. The former West Ham United man has been linked with a Bundesliga switch for several days now. Plettenberg claims that the 32-year-old is in Sinsheim undergoing his medical.

Hoffenheim have thus found their preferred replacement for the injured Valentin Gendrey. There should be nothing precluding the East London mainstay from earning an immediate place in head coach Christian Ilzer’s starting XI. Gendrey was earmarked to replace the departed Pavel Kaderabek at the Kraichgau-based club.

Coufal shall serve as Hoffenheim’s second signing from the Isle this summer. Dutch midfielder Wouter Burger also joined the Sinsheimers on a €4m transfer from Stoke.

Hoffenheim – thanks in large part due to Anton Stach’s €20m sale to Leeds – are operating with an estimated €9 summer transfer surplus.

After VfL Bochum defender Bernardo and Köln attacker Tim Lemperle, Coufal will be the third player Hoffenheim have signed on a free this summer.
