There has been a lot of noise regarding potential investment or a takeover at Charlton Athletic in the last few weeks, with things seemingly accelerating in the last couple of days, but Charlie Methven reiterated that he has no intention of entering the boardroom at The Valley when he spoke to the South London Press.

Methven has been present at recent Addicks home games in the directors’ box which added fuel to suggestions that takeover negotiations were in motion.

There has been a negative reaction to such rumblings from the supporter base, with Methven appearing to leave his position of influence at Sunderland as a fairly unpopular figure on Wearside.

Newly appointed Finance Director at Charlton Edward Warrick has recently set up a company called SE7 Partners Limited with Methven, which also provoked concern from the Addicks’ supporter base regarding instability at the club.

Methven poured cold water on rumours that he is heading up a takeover bid when he spoke to the South London Press.

Methven said: “I have seen the speculation linking me with Mohamed Mansour (who is looking to take over an English football club according to The Telegraph) and becoming chief exec of Charlton.

“In truth I had never even heard of Mr Mansour, and have no intention of becoming an exec at CAFC or anywhere else for that matter.

“I know Thomas Sandgaard a bit ‐ I met him when Sunderland played Charlton a couple of years back and he had just taken over ownership.

“A few weeks ago we caught up for the first time in a while, and I advised him to hire some experienced senior execs to run the club.

“I don’t think that was especially revolutionary advice, but he took it and I recommended a few candidates I had come across during my time in football.

“Ed Warrick and I were both consultants at Spurs together a few years back.

“Whilst clearly neither he nor I have the financial wherewithal ourselves to fund a takeover of any club, let alone Charlton, under the right circumstances we would put a few quid in (via SE7 Partners Limited), and if we did then we would do so together.”

It does not feel like this is the last that we will hear from Methven in the coming months, with his time at Sunderland also coinciding with that of newly appointed Chief Operating Officer at The Valley Jim Rodwell supports that notion.

Has former Charlton man Chris Gunter ever played for a Yorkshire based team?

Yes No

Addicks supporters have a lot of unanswered questions with regards to who is in control of certain areas of the club at the moment and whether or not Thomas Sandgaard is looking to reduce his role in SE7, or even sell up altogether.

The appointment of Andy Scott as Technical Director, who has a wealth of experience working in recruitment following his playing and managerial career, does suggest that Thomas Sandgaard is distributing the work a little more at the club, but given that he has previously spoken of aiming to break even financially, it is hard to understand why he appointed four new members of staff at the club on Tuesday and whether those hires where even made by the Dane himself.

In the aftermath of the unorthodox hiring process that hit the headlines on Tuesday, the Addicks host Brighton and Hove Albion in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup this evening.
