Barclays Women’s Championship club Lewes have completed the signing of former Republic of Ireland youth international forward Kate Mooney.

The Rooks announced news of the transfer via a post on their official club website this evening.

Mooney joins Lewes from SSE Airtricity League Women’s Premier Division club Peamount United. The 24-year-old had only been with The Peas for a short time but made a real impact, scoring five goals in seven games. The player also counts Shelbourne and DLR Waves amongst her former clubs.

On the international stage, Mooney has represented the Republic of Ireland up to and including Under-19 level. She is yet to break into The Girls in Green’s senior squad. Given her move to the elite game and the fact that the Republic of Ireland will appoint a new national team head coach, Mooney will be keen to push her claims for her first senior cap.

Lewes have reported that Mooney has travelled with the team to the North East ahead of Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Championship fixture at Durham. The player could be in contention for a place in head coach Scott Booth’s matchday squad.

The Rooks are looking to bounce back from a 4-1 opening day defeat to Southampton when they face Durham at Maiden Castle this weekend.
