Despite some controversy, Arsenal are now 21 games unbeaten in all competitions following their 1-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday.

Arsenal were far from their best and needed late heroics from Lucas Torreira to secure all three points.

Many fans believe that Alexandre Lacazette should have put the Gunners up a goal before half-time when he took advantage of a defensive error, rounded Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lössl, and tapped the ball into an empty net.

However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher came to Paul Tierney’s defence on Sky Sports and offered his explanation as to why Lacazette was ‘correctly’ deemed offside.

“It is the right decision because when the ball is flicked on by Aubameyang, Lacazette is offside,” he told Sky Sports.

“He then impacts on the defender because he starts in an offside position and assistant Simon Becker has waited because if Lacazette gets onto the ball, he will flag.

“But Lacazette then moves to an onside position and as soon as he does that, he realises he hasn’t been flagged and then goes towards the defender which impacts on his ability to play that ball.

“It’s at that point that the assistant flags.”

VAR cannot come soon enough.
