Former Rangers hero wants to hurt his old club | OneFootball

This weekend will see the return to Ibrox of Lee McCulloch for the first time in the league since 2015. There was a cup quarter in 2016 during his short spell as Killie boss, but this time as Hearts assistant is a much more significant affair, with the Gorgie side flying high and McCulloch being a huge part of it.

So this is his first real proper return to Govan, and let’s be honest, few gave more to Rangers than McCulloch did, including of course remaining at the club when so many first-teamers abandoned us.

McCulloch was around 33 when ‘it all happened’ so he could certainly have gotten himself a cushy gig at some Championship team in England, but he stayed, and we’ll always remember him fondly for that.

How well is he overall remembered?

Look, we’re not going to paper over the cracks here – his spell until 2012 was decent if nothing remarkable, and his post-2012 time was filled with controversy and that inexplicable use of him as a defender, with more than a hint of ‘untouchable’ about him.

So much so that he sadly was booed one match v Falkirk by fans exasperated at his still getting a slot however he played.

It was even suggested he had an immunity clause in his deal, that if fit he played. Sound like anyone we know?

End of the day though, he was an unfair scapegoat of a dark time at Ibrox – he did his best, and he stuck by us.

He is one of us, and should be remembered well for what he gave us.

But let’s hope he has a right rotten day on Saturday.
