Marcus Bignot has been appointed Aston Villa Women manager on an interim basis.

The former Football League defender previously spent seven years in charge of Birmingham City Women as he continued his playing career before moving into the men’s coaching arena in 2005.

Villa, currently 11th in the FA Women’s Super League, confirmed current coach Gemma Davies and her staff will remain in place.

“I am delighted to be able to help at such a progressive club in women’s football,” Bignot said.

“It is also a great opportunity to mentor a talented young coaching group led by Gemma.”
