According to Florian Plettenberg, Anwar El Ghazi is set to join 1. FSV Mainz 05, following his departure from PSV Eindhoven at the beginning of the month. The 28-year-old winger is currently a free agent, and for the last week he’s been training with the reserve side at his former club, Ajax. Technical director Sven Mislintat reportedly did not want to re-sign the player, so the Dutchman will now move to Germany.
El Ghazi scored 23 goals and provided 28 assists in exactly 100 appearances for Ajax. His spell with the Dutch giants lasted four seasons, between 2013 and 2017. A move to Lille followed for the forward, and after two impressive seasons in the French top flight, he joined Aston Villa. Anwar El Ghazi scored 26 goals and provided 16 assists within 119 appearances for Villa. In 2022 he joined Everton on loan, before returning to the Netherlands to play for PSV.
Earlier this month it was reported that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was keen to add El Ghazi to his squad. Interest in the winger quickly vanished, and he’s now set to join Mainz. The German club are currently 18th in the Bundesliga table after four matches. Last season, they finished 9th, and they’ll be hoping that Anwar El Ghazi can help to fire them back up the table.
