Paris Saint-Germain will face Aston Villa for a spot in the semifinals. For Emiliano Martínez, who played a key role in Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, it will be a return to French soil.
Despite his World Cup success, one former PSG goalkeeper doesn’t consider Martínez to be among the world’s elite shot-stoppers.
PSG recently secured their 13th league title with a 1-0 win over Angers, while Villa picked up a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in their latest outing. Both sides are full of confidence, and their goalkeepers will be crucial to deciding whether their Champions League run continues.

Former PSG star Bernard Lama spoke on the podcast La Voix des Gardiens and stated that while Martínez is a good goalkeeper, he doesn’t view the Argentine in the upper echelon of shot-stoppers.
“He can be a bit exasperating with his provocations,” Lama said (h/t Canal Supporters). “I don’t like that. But other than that, he’s a good goalkeeper, nothing more. He’s not a great goalkeeper. He’s a good one who has his moments, and he had his good period during the World Cup. But he’s not THE great goalkeeper.”
It will be interesting to see how Martínez performs over the 180 minutes. The last time he was in France, when Aston Villa faced LOSC Lille and advanced, he performed well and allowed the English side to advance.
