This summer will mark the anniversary that shocked the football world and sports in general when Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona. The Argentine’s contract had expired, and the Spanish club could not fit his contract while trying to comply with La Liga’s wage rules.

As a result, Messi would leave and join Paris Saint-Germain for what would be an underwhelming first season. Nonetheless, a former Barcelona presidential candidate stated that Messi would still be with the Catalan side if he had beaten current president Joan Laporta for the role.

In an interview with El Larguero, Victor Font, one of the names running for Barcelona president, stated that he had a plan to keep Messi if he had won the election.

“Well, who knows. I like to think so,” Font said. “I will tell you because I am optimistic and because we had worked and because we had a plan, that if you ask me my opinion, I am convinced that it is.”

“But I cannot guarantee it because obviously, it is doing a bit of politics, fiction, or a bit of science fiction itself because we don’t know what would have happened.”

Furthermore, Font stated that he was surprised to see Messi leave Barcelona, detailing his plan to keep the Argentine forward with the Spanish side.

“Of course, I was surprised by Messi’s departure. If we were going to solve it with a barbecue, how could I not be surprised,” Font said.

Messi will hope to have a bounce-back second season with PSG, considering he doesn’t have to deal with the commotion of leaving Barcelona and now understands the physicality of Ligue 1.
