Robbie Keane has taken his first steps into management … after being announced as the new head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The Israeli club have confirmed that the former Premier League striker has signed a two-year deal to take charge of the Ligat ha’Al side for the 2023/24 season.

The 42-year-old scored over 400 goals while featuring in the English top flight for Tottenham, Leeds, Liverpool, Coventry, West Ham and Aston Villa during his playing days.

He retired in November 2018 and has held assistant manager roles at Middlesbrough and the Irish national side since quitting playing.

Keane was also appointed first team coach at Leeds towards the end of last season.

Maccabi finished third in the league in 2022/23 and will play in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
