Former Napoli coach Gianni Di Marzio believes his former side must not only be concerned with Inter’s attacking threat, ahead of their meeting tomorrow evening.

Antonio Conte’s Inter side travel to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona looking to secure a 12th consecutive league win and edge ever closer to the Scudetto, but in addition to strikers Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, Di Marzio felt the Nerazzurri’s defence would be significant factor in any victory.

Appearing on Italian radio station Radio Marte earlier today, Di Marzio felt that Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso needed to consider his attacking options in order to counter Inter’s defence.

“Beyond the two Inter strikers, there is another problem. You have to understand who to choose from between [Dries] Mertens and [Victor] Osimhen and therefore decide on the basis of their characteristics,” Di Marzio claimed.

“Inter’s defence is very strong and I would prefer Mertens because he is quick and can put them in difficulty. There is some apprehension, so perhaps the Nigerian would be better from the start, but the game will mainly take place on the flanks.

“For me, Elseid Hysaj must play to contain [Achraf] Hakimi, and [Piotr] Zielinski must be in midfield to prevent [Marcelo] Brozovic,” Di Marzio concluded.

The 80-year-old led Napoli as coach from 1977 to 1979 and also had a stint in Serie A as Catania coach, in between taking the helm of Serie B club Genoa.

Inter are just 13 points away from winning a first Scudetto since 2010 and will look to move closer with victory in Naples.
