Former Manchester United player Marcel Sabitzer has penalty reversed in bizarre incident in the Bundesliga | OneFootball

Erik ten Hag has found himself under major pressure at Manchester United after following a fine first season with a disastrous second.

Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabitzer played a part in United’s strong campaign last time out having joined Ten Hag’s troops for the second half of the season.

However, the 30-year-old wasn’t signed on a permanent deal last summer and signed for German giants Borussia Dortmund.

Sabitzer has enjoyed a decent season in the Bundesliga, with Dortmund still in the Champions League and fighting for a place in the top four of Germany’s top flight.

As reported by The Daily Mail, the midfielder played a key role in Dortmund’s 2-1 away win at Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday which included a bizarre incident surrounding a penalty.

After lashing Dortmund ahead just after 20 minutes and then converting from the spot five minutes later, Dortmund took a 2-1 lead into half-time and Sabitzer was eyeing a hat-trick.

Moments after the break, Dortmund were awarded their second spot-kick and Sabitzer stepped up to claim his third.

He struck the ball past the ‘Gladbach keeper, however, referee Florian Badstübner called for a VAR check just as the ball was kicked.

VAR then ruled Jonas Omlin had won the ball in his tangle with Karim Adeyemi, Dortmund were denied the penalty and Sabitzer missed out on the match ball.

Fortunately for the visitors, they did hang on for all three points and are now level with RB Leipzig in the fight for fourth in the Bundesliga.

It was an historic weekend all-round in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-0 demolition of Werder Bremen securing the title and breaking Bayern Munich’s 11 season stranglehold on the competition.

Sabitzer and his teammates face Leverkusen next week and will hope to catch the Champions on a hangover as they attempt to end the season strongly to secure Champions League football for next season.
