The managerial merry-go-round is in full swing with a raft of top clubs and coaches making changes this summer.

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been tipped for a bright future as a head coach having been linked with Premier League clubs.

However, the 42-year-old has agreed to extend his stay in the Championship with Middlesbrough, as he bids for promotion to the top division.

Football expert Fabrizio Romano announced the news with Carrick’s new deal set to run until 2027.

Carrick has impressed during his time on Teesside, guiding them to the playoffs in his first full season and an impressive Carabao Cup semi-final run last time out.

Boro had to contend with a lengthy injury list for the majority of the last campaign but the former United midfielder rallied his troops and was unlucky not to sneak into a play-off spot for the second successive season.

The former England man has expressed his delight at his new deal but admits nothing will change in his approach to getting the club back to the promised land of the Premier League.

“I’m really happy. I’ve always been quite calm about it. I think having that attachment, that trust and that belief within the club is really important.

“We’ve certainly got that – that’s what still gives me the great feeling that I had when I first walked through the door.

“It feels like a big step as a headline, as a statement, but really it doesn’t change anything I do or how I approach it, it just carries on what we’re trying to achieve,” he said.

Middlesbrough have been out of the top flight since the 2016/17 season and Carrick would be granted hero status should he guide the team back to the big time.

Meanwhile, United boss Erik ten Hag has no such certainties over his future with INEOS on the verge of announcing their decision on whether he will be granted a third year in Manchester.
