Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is set to return to his home country, with Ajax pushing to secure his services.

Earlier this month, Weghorst made his Championship debut for Burnley, more than two years after moving to Turf Moor.

Interestingly, in between that period, the Dutchman played for Beşiktaş, United, and TSG Hoffenheim.

He scored zero goals for the Red Devils in the Premier League. However, the 32-year-old managed to earn plenty of adoration from the United faithful due to his give-it-all attitude.

The cult hero also added silverware to his resume, lifting the League Cup following United’s win over Newcastle United at Wembley in February 2023.

Now, the Netherlands international is set for another big switch, swapping the English second-tier for Eredivisie.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Weghorst has reached an agreement over personal terms with Ajax. He will put pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2026.

Ajax are yet to find an agreement with Burnley. However, the negotiations between the two parties are progressing smoothly and it is “a matter of time” before a consensus is reached.

In an interview with Kicker (via De Telegraaf), the former AZ striker suggested he is keen on moving to Amsterdam by labelling Ajax as the biggest club in the country.

“For me, the total package must be correct, we have our fourth child and we have travelled a lot as a family in recent years,” he said. “Ajax is the biggest club in the Netherlands, I don’t have to say more.”

Ajax have also been linked with another United fan-favourite, Christian Eriksen.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Dutch giants have expressed interest in signing Eriksen. Due to their tight budget, they have tried to sign the midfielder on a loan deal. However, INEOS are not keen on a temporary exit.
