Former Manchester United defender joins Cypriot side on free transfer | OneFootball

Apollon Limassol have confirmed that Manchester United flop Alexander Buttner has joined them on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old was on the books of MLS side New England Revolution but the two parties mutually agreed to part ways recently.

The experienced left-back, who can also operate as a left midfielder, has penned a 16-months deal with Apollon.

The Limassol club said: “Apollon Football Company Ltd announces the agreement in principle with Dutch footballer Alexander Buttner until May 2022.

“The agreement will be ratified with the descent of the footballer in Cyprus after having successfully completed the necessary medical examinations.”

The former Netherlands U20 international joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2012 in a £4 million move from Vitesse Arnhem (as per The Daily Mail).

Buttner helped the English side to win the Premier League title in his first season, making five appearances and scoring two goals.

However, he struggled to earn regular football the following campaign with Patrice Evra preferred by then manager David Moyes.

The defender clocked up 28 appearances in all competitions during his two years at Old Trafford before leaving for Dynamo Moscow in 2014.

The 31-year-old racked up 37 total appearances for the Russian side, with a goal and an assist to his name. He then went on to play for Anderlecht, Vitesse Arnhem and New England Revolution.
