Raphael Varane is believed to be considering retirement shortly after joining Como from Manchester United.

Varane, who enjoyed an illustrious career at club and country level, departed Manchester United in the summer. It was time for the Frenchman to leave and he wanted an opportunity in a new league.

Having already played in Ligue 1, La Liga and the Premier League, the idea of playing in Serie A appealed to Varane.

According to Le Parisien, Varane is about to terminate his contract at Como.

Varane joined Serie A side Como on a free transfer during the summer but endured a nightmare start to life at the club as he sustained a serious injury on his debut, in the first round of the Coppa Italia at Sampdoria back in August. He lasted only 23 minutes before being forced to come off.

Now, he’s having to sit in the sidelines and bide his time again, and there’s only so much of that a proven winner can take.

Having idolised defenders throughout his career, and looking up to the greats before his time, playing in Italy should be seen as an honour but Varane has no shortage of those. He’s won it all.

Sadly at United, we never got to see Varane at his best due to injuries and fitness concerns.

It looks like the prospect of having a career in Serie A is fading for the former United defender.
