Teddy Sheringham delivered a damning assessment of Manchester United‘s captain and the state of the football club, saying a lot needs to change at Old Trafford.
The ex-United man was speaking after the Tottenham Hotspur legends match against AC Milan legends, and had some harsh words to say on his former club.
Asked what needs changing for United, Sheringham said: “For me they need the big signings. When Harry Kane and Declan Rice became available two years ago, if Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) was in charge he would have broke the bank and gone out to get one of them.
“Both of them, probably, to lead by example. Bruno is a fantastic player but he is not a leader of football men… Look over the years when he (Ferguson) signed Pallister, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney.
“They were all top young players and he knew they lead by example and people follow them, and want to be like them. They want to play as well as them and they don’t want to let people down.”
The ex-England man also spoke about the importance for his other former side, Tottenham, of winning a trophy. Asked who out of United and Spurs needs to win the Europa League more, Sheringham said: “Tottenham, without a doubt. Manchester United have won things over the past couple of years.
“Things are not rosy at either club but Tottenham need to win it. Without a shadow of a doubt it would mean a lot more to them. This club is in need of silverware. They get ridiculed year after year. This is a massive football club that needs to get back amongst the silverware.”
Manchester United face Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, whilst Tottenham have Eintracht Frankfurt.
With both teams on opposite sides of the draw, there is still a real chance they could face off in the latter rounds of the competition.
