Louis van Gaal has just revealed that he rejected an approach to become Bayern Munich head coach before they appointed Vincent Kompany. Speaking to RTL, the former Manchester United and Netherlands boss confirmed that he received the offer to take charge of the German giants earlier this year but he immediately turned it down.
The 72-year-old quickly made it clear that he no longer wants to coach a club but would be open to managing an international side. “As a national team coach, you’re busy for most periods and during the year you scout with your staff. That could still be possible,” Van Gaal revealed.
Between 2009 and 2011, Louis van Gaal managed Bayern Munich in what was deemed to be a relatively successful spell. The Dutchman guided Bayern to the 2009/10 Bundesliga title and won the DFB-Pokal that same season. They lifted the German Super Cup the following campaign.
In addition to the managerial news, Louis van Gaal also provided an update on his health as he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. “I can manage it well,” he said. “I have a wife who is the best carer, what more could you want? I am reasonably healthy now.”
