Jesse Lingard set for MLS talks amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest

According to ESPN (h/t Express), former Manchester United man Jesse Lingard is set to fly out to the United States amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur to hold talks with MLS clubs. Having left the Red Devils as a free agent at the end of last season, the 29-year-old is still in search of a club.

Having played just 540 minutes in the whole of last season, the attacking player left his boyhood club on 1 July after his contract expired. Lingard started just two games for the club last season as both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick preferred other options.

Spurs and West Ham United are some of the sides in the Premier League that have registered an interest in his signature. A move to MLS where teams are prepared to give the attacking midfielder a ‘ground-breaking deal’ is a tempting prospect.

For the North London side, though, Lingard will be another cog in Antonio Conte’s machine if he signs. Tottenham are looking to build something special for next season and want to add quality in depth for the Italian to utilise over a long season.

Spurs have already confirmed four incomings this summer. The North London side seem set for a long summer with other names linked with the club, the 29-year-old being one of them. The attack has especially been strengthened under the new Italian boss.

Dejan Kulusevski arrived in January and immediately made himself a fixture in the squad for Conte to consider with his performances. The 22-year-old arrived from Juventus on deadline day in January and has shown his worth.

Ivan Perisic arrived from Inter Milan this summer as well. The winger is another experienced name added to the squad and the former Bundesliga and Serie A champion will also be one fans will look out for next season.

Richarlison has recently arrived from Everton. The striker was signed for big money. The Brazilian will be in and around the starting XI for Conte. While Lingard can play in the forward line, fans will feel it’ll be a mammoth task to get past the names in a squad that includes Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

A move to MLS for a player of the 29-year-old’s quality means guaranteed game time. But if a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad is up for grabs, a move to the United States is probably the wrong one.
