Reds forward Takumi Minamino has stated that former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa convinced him to join Liverpool.

Liverpool triggered Minamino’s £7.25 million release clause back in December 2019, which meant he officially joined the club from Salzburg on January 1.

The Japan international made his debut for the Reds against Everton in the FA Cup back at the beginning of January, and he has showed signs that he will be a very handy addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Kagawa, who also played for Borussia Dortmund when Klopp was the manager, urged Minamino to take the chance to work under the German.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official programme, Minamino said: “I spoke to Maya Yoshida at Southampton but I didn’t ask him about Liverpool.

“I just told him that I would be coming to the Premier League, but I never told him that it would be Liverpool!

“I also spoke to Shinji Kagawa as he had played for Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund, too.

“Klopp talked to me about Shinji and Shinji talked about Klopp and from that I could sense that they had a really good relationship.

“Shinji said that Klopp was one of the best coaches in the world and now that I am here and working for him I have also realised he is one of the best coaches around.”

Very few players have anything bad to say about Klopp. What Kagawa said regaridng Klopp is spot on. He is one of the best coaches to work under.

Minamino’s game will improve dramatically in a few years, providing the Anfield faithful give him the patience required.

Most of Klopp’s signings at Liverpool have worked, which means there is confidence that Minamino will turn into a fine player for the Reds.
