Bayer Leverkusen are quietly planning for a potential managerial change, with Erik ten Hag now emerging as a serious candidate, according to Sky Sports Germany. The Dutchman, currently without a club, has been listed among Leverkusen’s potential successors to Xabi Alonso, should the Spaniard leave for Real Madrid.

“There have been no concrete talks with ten Hag,” reports Sky, but Leverkusen have “gathered key information” and are currently assessing a range of coaches. Among those evaluated is Imanol Alguacil of Real Sociedad, whose work in La Liga has attracted widespread admiration.

Leverkusen remain in limbo as Alonso’s decision depends heavily on the future of Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian has reportedly agreed to take over Brazil’s national team at the end of the season, but as of midweek, a formal agreement between Real Madrid, the Brazilian federation and Ancelotti on the terms of his release had not been finalised.
The uncertainty surrounding Ancelotti’s departure has stalled Alonso’s trajectory, though most signs point to him becoming Madrid’s preferred choice.
From a broader footballing perspective, Bayer Leverkusen’s quiet diligence is admirable. This isn’t a club acting on impulse or emotion — it’s one reading the room and planning for every eventuality. Should Xabi Alonso leave for Real Madrid, it would not be a betrayal, but rather a natural progression for a manager whose stock has soared over the past two seasons. What’s striking, though, is Leverkusen’s readiness.
Identifying Erik ten Hag, a coach with vast experience at Ajax and Manchester United, shows ambition. While ten Hag’s time at United ended without challenging for the league, his tactical foundations and player development record remain impressive. A spell in the Bundesliga — particularly with a squad as dynamic and balanced as Leverkusen’s — might just suit his approach better than the pressures of Old Trafford.
But much hinges on Ancelotti. His delayed departure could create a domino effect, with Madrid, Leverkusen and even clubs like United or Bayern watching closely. The inclusion of Imanol Alguacil in Leverkusen’s shortlist suggests they’re keeping all options open, which is smart. Continuity is vital, and replacing a transformational figure like Alonso demands not just a steady hand but one with tactical bravery.
Leverkusen may lose their mastermind, but they refuse to lose control.
