AFC Wimbledon have officially confirmed the signing of former Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.
The 25 year old joined United from Southend United in 2020.
He spent the 2021-2022 season on loan at Mansfield Town, playing in 53 competitive games for The Stags.
The Englishman did feature in some pre-season matches under Erik ten Hag but ultimately, he was unable to break into the Red Devils’ first team and signed for Sunderland in 2023.
Bishop also found first team football hard to come by in the North-East and joined Wycombe Wanderers and Cambridge United on loan.
The former United keeper has found himself a new home where he will certainly hope to play much more consistently than he has recently managed.
AFC Wimbledon’s official website confirms, “we’re delighted to announce that the Dons have completed the permanent signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Nathan Bishop on a three-year contract.”
Bishop is described as a player who “is a talented shot-stopper” and someone “who significantly bolsters our goalkeeping department.”
Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson commented, “we are really pleased to get a goalkeeper of such quality with real experience, he’s played for some big clubs so we know exactly what we are getting.”
Director of Football Craig Cope also claimed, “we are delighted to have Nathan join. He’s a goalkeeper with real pedigree.”
Finally Bishop himself provided his two cents on the move stating, “the manager, Bayzo the staff and players were a massive part of me joining this fantastic club. Then I heard about the fans – I am delighted to be here and cannot wait to give everything to the people who built this place brick by brick. Up the Wombles!”.
The former United keeper could make his debut for The Dons in a friendly this Saturday when they take on Pafos.
The club are certainly on a positive trajectory as they were recently promoted to League One last season, beating Walsall 1-0 in the playoff final.
