Following Lazio’s 2-1 victory over Empoli, Nicolo Rovella explained how he gradually fell in love with the club and spoke about being snubbed by Luciano Spalletti for the Azzurri’s upcoming International Friendlies.

The 22-year-old is a Genoa youth product who was poached by Juventus in January 2021 but never truly had the chance to prove his worth in Turin. In the summer of 2023, the young Italian signed for the Biancocelesti.

While he had his ups and downs during his maiden campaign in Rome, he has now established himself as a key player at Marco Baroni’s court.

Last Season’s Issues

The deep-lying playmaker produced another fine showing in the 2-1 victory over Empoli. In his post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Rovella attributed last season’s struggles to an injury that impeded his form.

Every time we play, we have to aim for victory. We are proving it and we have to continue on this path. I think it was the physical problems that derailed me last season, as I had groin issues. But I feel much better now.

Lazio Passion

The young midfielder explained how he slowly but surely became a die-hard Lazio supporter.

I feel like a Lazio fan. I wasn’t born a Biancocelesti supporter, but I’m happy to have become one. It’s an incredible passion, and I hope to play as many years as possible here.

Italy Snub

Despite his impressive form, Rovella couldn’t earn himself an Italy call-up.

I’m just excited to play for Lazio at the moment. Then, whoever makes the call-ups will have to evaluate the situation. I have great respect for mister Spalletti. I believe I still have large room for growth and improvement. I feel I was lacking a bit of quality in vertical passes but it also depended on the opponent and the requests of the coach which are different this term.
