Ex-Inter striker Diego Forlan has looked back on his time with the club and admitted that he was unable to show his true ability due to mounting injuries.

The former Uruguay international spent a single season with Inter after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, in what would be his final year in European football before moving to Brazilian club Internacional, and subsequently playing in Japan, India, and Uruguay.

In an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Forlan insisted that he was still close to Inter and that he regretted not being able to make more of an impact, whilst revealing that he remained in contact with some former Nerazzurri teammates.

“Of course I still follow Inter, every now and then I hear from (Javier) Zanetti, (Walter) Samuel and (Diego) Milito,” the former Manchester United striker claimed.

“I was only at Inter for a year and I had many injuries. I was sorry not to be able to give more, but that club has remained in my heart.”

Forlan enjoyed great success with Uruguay at the World Cup, leading his country to the semi-final of the 2010 edition and finishing the tournament as the joint top scorer, and winning the Golden Ball.

With Italy failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Forlan reassured that the Azzurri could bounce back, particularly as Uruguay had also missed two consecutive tournaments before fighting back.

“I’m sorry for Italy, it seems impossible that the champions of Europe are not here.

“Instead it is like this, even if it’s the second time in a row.

“It also happened to Uruguay, who missed the World Cup in 1994 and 1998. In Italy there are many good players and so I’m sure you’ll be there next time. Football is like that,” he concluded.

The 43-year-old made 20 appearances for Inter in his sole season at the club but only managed two goals in all competitions.
