National League side Morecambe FC confirmed the signing of Miguel Azeez on Sunday, with the former Arsenal academy midfielder set to wear the number eight shirt at his new club.

Though Morecambe didn’t confirm the length of Azeez’s stay, it’s believed he’s signed a one-year deal with the club as they push for promotion. Shorter contracts are more common in the English lower divisions, unlike in the Premier League where most players sign for three, four, or five years.

“I’m really happy that Miguel decided to join us, there was interest from clubs all over europe, competing in high leagues,” Morecambe boss Ashvir Singh Johal said.

Morecambe have been through a lot this summer, with the club only having a total of five players in their squad when their club was officially taken over by Panjab Warriors last Monday. They’ve had to go on a signing spree since then.

There was consequently a bit of a fairytale feel to Saturday’s game against Altrincham, Morecambe’s first game of the new campaign (most National League clubs have already played 4 matches).

Daniel Ogwuru scored a 98th minute winner in a 2-1 result, having signed for the club the previous day.

“We all have the same ambition,” Azeez said in his first Morecambe interview. “To [be promoted], and to excite the fans again because we’ve been in a difficult situation. I feel like everyone just needs to be happy and start enjoying football again and get back to where we need to be.”

Azeez was also asked about his time with Arsenal during the interview, and he had positive words to say about his time with the Gunners’ academy.

“I was there for a long time, since I was five,” Azeez said. “I worked with a lot of great players and great managers, so they’ve helped me to be a well-rounded person as well, as well as a footballer.

“I’ve got a lot of experiences playing with the likes of David Luiz and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, and players like this, and it’s helped me to get a better understanding of how to play football in the right way.”

With any luck, Azeez will be able to apply those experiences with Morecambe and help them back to the English Football League.
